VIDEOWith just 30 minutes to go until he was supposed to take the stage, “American Idol” contestant Reed Grimm was forced to abruptly change his performance plans.
As seen on Wednesday’s show, Grimm planned to sing a capella for his final Hollywood Week audition – until producers informed him he must appear with the show’s backing band.
It was unclear why he was told at the last minute, but Grimm quickly met with the vocal coaches to come up with a new game plan.
“This is so surreal,” he said, later faltering in his confidence and admitting, “I don’t know if this is right.”

Grimm and his cold feet retreated to his hotel room – with only 11 minutes to spare – for a quick pep talk with his mom.
When the reinvigorated singer finally took the stage, he announced, “I’m the next American Idol ’cause I got something that ain’t nobody got.”
Grimm then wowed the judges by playing the drums as he sang “Georgia On My Mind.”
At the end of the episode, Grimm found out he – and 69 others – made it on to the next round in Las Vegas.
